Outdoor Spaces Enrich Senior Living Community

Here in colorful Colorado, we take pleasure in diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes made even more enjoyable by 300 sunny days on average per year. This is no different for older adults, in fact there is evidence that there are strong health benefits. This is one reason it is important to have access to outdoor spaces in senior living communities. Someren Glen Continuing Care Community in Centennial, Colorado is known for our 14 acres of serene and lush rolling lawns, colorful gardens, and inviting outdoor spaces.

In the warm months visitors are welcomed by various species of trees, vibrant tulips and irises, gorgeous roses, and fragrant lilac bushes. Residents have easy access to porches and courtyards and may also participate in outdoor-focused events such as educational nature walks and festive garden parties. Meals may also be enjoyed al fresco when the weather permits. For residents of our skilled nursing neighborhood who may not venture outside as often, Someren Glen was designed to ensure that each apartment, including companion suites, provides a window for each resident to view the beautiful grounds. Additionally, our Eldergrow® garden offers opportunities to connect with the natural world all year round.

Access to the Outdoors Provides Numerous Benefits for Senior Adults

It may seem like a no-brainer that spending time outdoors in a natural environment boosts mood and reduces stress levels, but numerous studies show that it also improves older adults’ physical and mental health. Additionally, several studies have indicated that spending consistent quality time outdoors may positively benefit seniors’ memory and creativity. Regular exposure to natural light may also help ward off the debilitating effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) that can trigger depression during the long fall and winter months.

Finding Purpose in the Outdoors

Along with the benefits of breathing fresh air and soaking in the sun, the Someren Glen grounds also provide a crucial sense of purpose for many residents. “We have ten raised garden beds that several of our assisted living and independent living residents adopted,” explained Marketing and Sales Director Susan Eakin. “One gentleman has a large garden patch where he grows pumpkins, zucchini and tomatoes. Tending to the grounds gives many residents a true sense of purpose.” Residents find purpose in taking ownership of their natural environment by planting and watering vegetables and flowers, maintaining flower baskets and snipping blooms that are past their prime. Diane, a Someren Glen resident, loves to clip fresh flowers for her apartment and often puts together small bouquets to provide cheer for her friends. This activity brings joy to her heart and encourages connection and friendship within the community.

Someren Glen incorporates the The Eden Alternative® principles, which prioritize a purpose-filled life, into daily living in the community. This is not a traditional program, but a philosophy that seeks to put an end to what Dr. Bill Thomas calls the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. One specific principle states, “We thrive when we have purpose and the opportunity to give, as well as receive. This is the antidote to helplessness.” Enjoying the spacious grounds and working in the gardens provides this antidote for many in the community.
