From The Johnson Center to Someren Glen, a History of Care

November 12, 2024

Nestled in the picturesque suburbs of Denver, Someren Glen stands as a beacon of excellence in senior living. Formerly known as The Johnson Center, our continuing care retirement community offers a unique blend of comfort, care, and vibrant lifestyle options for older adults seeking a place to call home. Our parent organization, Christian Living Communities (CLC), has always strived to honor the aging process with dignity. Someren Glen is no different, but you may recognize this CLC community as The Johnson Center.

How It Started – The Johnson Center

After receiving grants in 1987 from the Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation, CLC was able to purchase fourteen lush acres in Centennial, Colorado; planning began and the vision of a nursing home and assisted living facility with a special unit for residents living with dementia became a reality. Before a rebranding in 2013, Someren Glen was known as The Johnson Center. CLC’s mission has always been to enrich the quality and dignity of life for older adults through services and care that reflect Christian love, respect, and compassion toward each individual. It is that mission that prompted the vision of The Johnson Center, to provide dignified aging resources to the Centennial community.

On April 25th, 1989 ground broke, and on April 30th, 1990 The Johnson Center opened its doors. At the time of its opening, The Johnson Center was the only community in the Arapahoe County area to offer both assisted living and long-term care services. Over the next six years, The Johnson Center started a community outreach program, home care services, a hospice center, and opened The Village at the Johnson Center, which included retirement and assisted living apartments.

Becoming Someren Glen

In 2013, with the help of Sigler Communications, CLC decided to rebrand and combine The Johnson Center and The Village at the Johnson Center under one identifying name, making it easier for families and future residents to find one unified place of care.

Chuck Montera, Vice President of Sigler Communications, recalls, “When Sigler was hired to rename the Johnson Center, we wanted to honor CLC’s Dutch Reform heritage. Someren is a municipality in the Netherlands and we paired that with Glen because it had a nice sound, flow and feel. We had originally developed a list of about eight names and that got paired down to three or four.” Ultimately, The Johnson Center residents chose the final name, Someren Glen.

Someren Glen, which was built on the roots of the Johnson Center and is still owned by Christian Living Communities, is a beautiful Continuing Care Retirement Community dedicated to providing exceptional services and possibilities for older adults.
